‘Very happy to be here’ – Ten Hag slams journalists for taking Manchester United star of out context

Bruno Fernandes does not plan on moving away from Manchester United anytime soon, despite rumours suggesting otherwise.

The Portugal international has Euro 2024 to look forward to this summer, but he will remain at Old Trafford next season.

In an interview with DAZN last week, Fernandes’ comments were taken out of context when he said he would consider his future at United after this year’s European Championships. The only way he would stay in Manchester was if both he and the club wanted him to.

There was no doubt in our minds at the time that Fernandes would have a future at United. He has been the club’s best signing since Robin van Persie and there are few things I’d like to see more than Fernandes winning the Premier League.

Ten Hag spoke to reporters ahead of United’s trip to Crystal Palace in the league.

When asked about Fernandes’ comments, Ten Hag said (via RTE): “That was taken out of context. I know he is Manchester United and I think he is very happy to be here.”

The Dutch manager said he “definitely” expects Fernandes to see out his contract at the club, which runs until 2026.

Ten Hag added: “Taking responsibility is one on the biggest assets top footballers have nowadays to show and to deliver.

“Bruno is a very good example for many other players. He is a real fighter. Last year when we played Brighton in the (FA Cup) semi-final, he played with an ankle that was so thick. It was unbelievable.

“He couldn’t run but he was still on the pitch. He is always available, always delivers and always gives energy to the team. Such assets are necessary to be successful.”

United go to Selhurst Park on Monday night trying to improve their league position, which is eighth in the Premier League.

Tonight’s opponents Palace are 14th-placed in the league. Perhaps the biggest blow for United is being without Fernandes, with our captain considered a doubt whilst wearing a protective medical bandage around his wrist.
